YoWindow Localization guide

Start

  1. Download and install the latest YoWindow for Windows.
  2. Find English localization XML file.
    • Go to this folder: C:\ProgramData\YoWindow\lang (Vista, Windows7),
      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\YoWindow\lang (Windows XP)
    • You need en.xml file - it contains all the English words for YoWindow
  3. Make a copy of en.xml in the same folder and name it after abbreviation of your language. Examples: de.xml for German, sv.xml for Swedish, no.xml for Norwegian. The name is important. You have to name the file corresponding to your language. Find abbreviation for your language here.
    For the clarity, let's assume you are going to translate YoWindow to German and you have copied en.xml to de.xml.
  4. de.xml is supposed to contain German translation of YoWindow. Let's check if YoWindow can pick de.xml up.
    • Run YoWindow (in case YoWindow is already running, restart it) .
    • Go to Options/General page.
    • Expand Language combo-box.
    • If you see the line "de" in the list everything is good, continue to the next step. Otherwise contact me for help.
    • Select "de", to make YoWindow pick words and phrases from de.xml.
  5. To edit de.xml you have to download and install "XML notepad 2007".
    Go download and install XML notepad
    Please do NOT edit the file with Windows Notepad (you and we may run into problems if you use it).
  6. Open de.xml in XML notepad.
  7. In "Tree View" right click "file" and then select "Expand".

Now you should see the original English words and phrases of YoWindow in the right pane. They are highlighted in BLUE color. You are going to translate them.

You are ready for translation!

Translation

All you have to do is to replace the English BLUE words with translations to your language.

WARNING: don't change anything except the BLUE words. This is important. Be careful. You can easily break the translation file by modifying the red words.

After you have made some translations, you can instantly preview your work!
Just save the file and restart YoWindow.

If you don't know how to translate the word - don't do this :)

Troubleshooting

Problem: translated text overlaps with other elements.
First try to make the text shorter, but make sure the user can understand the text.
If it is hard to pick a short translation, ask me.
Usually I can change the program to add an extra space for the text.
